Research Process

We studied a variety of different aspects related to the history and future of our school especially the Tower Block. Some of the things we did with the years 2 and 3 and some things we did by ourselves.

  • We started by taking photos of the Old Hall and put these onto boards with captions written by the year 2 and 3s.
  • We all sat together in the Old Hall and Miss Pivac (Deputy Principal) told us the "Ghost Story". This helped us understand what the school used to look like.
  • Some of us researched some of the Old Girls and interviewed people who knew about the history of the building.
  • We read some stories by Katherine Mansfield, "The Doll's House" and "Her First Ball". We made a model of the Doll's House, trying to make it look as it was described in the story, which helped us understand what life was like back then.
  • We went to Katherine Mansfield's Birthplace where we found out about the history of Thorndon and also how Katherine Mansfield might have been to the school when it was a family home.
  • We had an afternoon tea where we made scones and lemonade with the year 2 and 3's. We invited their parents and had afternoon tea while they explained everything they had been doing regarding the Tower Block.
  • Gina Jones, an architect from Accent Architects and also the architect for the School came and spoke to the year 2 and 3's and us about all the renovations that are happening in the Tower Block.
  • We studied Victorian architecture and interior design to imagine what the Tower Block would look like as a house. We discovered that our Tower Block was much more grand and spacious than Katherine Mansfield's Birthplace.
