The Ghost Story Of Queen Margaret College

Long, long, LONG LONG ago, before you or your parents or even your grandparents were born, there lived a family on Queen Margaret College. Back then, it wasn't a school but the William's home, a meeting point for Thorndon society. The house had a grand entrance hall that was used for dances.

A little girl lived in that home with her parents, and when she grew up, she fell in love with a sailor. Whenever the sailor came in from a voyage, they would ring a bell, to announce the arrival of the ship. At that time the seashore was much closer to Hobson Street, as the land had yet to be reclaimed. The William's built a magnificent tower from which they could watch the ships come into the harbour while enjoying afternoon tea and the view.

It was the night before her wedding and she was up in the tower waiting for the bell. There was storm, one of the worst Wellington has ever seen. As the boat was anchored in the wharf, it got tossed over by a wave, and it sank before her very eyes. She was devastated, as anyone would be. They say that she used to wander around in her wedding dress, grieving and waiting for her fiancé to come back. One night, she was dressed up in her wedding dress and decided to go up to the tower. There was a storm that night too, but not as bad as when her fiancé had died. Looking out as she had done years ago, she thought she had heard a bell. So excited, she ran down the stairs and out on to the landing, down the main stairs into the ballroom as fast as she could. She went too fast. She slipped, bumped her head and died. No-one could save her. They say the she still wanders around the halls of Queen Margaret as a ghost, looking for her loved one, 85 years on.
