Recovery of greater Christchurch photography competition

The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority (CERA) invited all schools - primary, intermediate and secondary - in greater Christchurch to take part in a photography competition. Schools were asked to submit photographs that reflected their students' visions of recovery - what greater Christchurch will be like in the future.

There are five categories that are based on the areas of recovery identified in the draft Recover Strategy:

1. Leadership and integration - leading, working together, connecting, community.
Recovery requires leadership and integration across all components of the environment. The community is central.

2. Economic - investment, business, jobs, skills/training, shops, tourism.
Revitalising greater Christchurch as the heart of a prosperous region for work and education, and increased investment in new activities, with a functioning Christchurch city, thriving suburban centres, flourishing rural towns, and a productive rural sector.

3. Social - sports, recreation, arts, culture and heritage, health, schools, education, communities, university.
Strengthening community resilience, renewing greater Christchurch’s unique sense of identity, and enhancing quality of life for residents and visitors.

4. Built - buildings, transport, systems, housing.
Developing resilient, sustainable and integrated strategic and community assets, housing, infrastructure and transport networks.

5. Natural - environment, rivers, wetlands, air quality, beaches.
Restoring the natural environment to support biodiversity, economic prosperity and reconnecting people to the rivers, wetlands and Port Hills.

A prize will also be awarded for the photograph that best represents the draft vision: Greater Christchurch recovers and progresses as a place to be proud of – an attractive and vibrant place to live, work, visit and invest – mo tatou, a, mo ka uri a muri ake nei – for us and our children after us.

Creating a visual resource

The photos will remain as a collection on this site after the competition closes – creating a visual resource for schools and New Zealanders. Winning photographs may also be used in the final Recovery Strategy for greater Christchurch document and supporting material.

Prizes

Prizes of a choice of vouchers for books or photography equipment will be awarded to winning students/classes. Schools of the winning students/classes will also receive prizes.

Entries closed at 5pm on 12 December 2011. Competition winners will be announced in the New Year.
